Kathedrale San Sabino (im Kern 11. Jahrhunderts; fünf byzantinische Kuppeln über antiken Säulen; Marmorkanzel um 1120, auf zwei Elefanten ruhender Bischofsstuhl, 1078-89), im Südhof Ruinen eines mittelalterlichen Kastells und eines Amphitheaters, Grabkapelle für Bohemund, Sohn Robert Guiscards (nach 1111; mit prächtiger Bronzetür).
 
 
C. di P. war im Altertum als Canusium eine bedeutende Stadt, die nach der Schlacht von Cannae (216 v. Chr.) den besiegten Römern eine Zuflucht bot. Seit dem 4. Jahrhundert Bischofssitz, der im 11. Jahrhundert endgültig nach Bari verlegt wurde, wo die Bischöfe (seit dem 10. Jahrhundert Erzbischöfe) nach dem Sarazeneneinfall im 9. Jahrhundert meist schon residiert hatten.
